The key difference is that Cat Reman heavy-duty engines with new content feature 100% new cylinder blocks, cylinder heads and crankshafts. That helps reduce the risk of a critical failure in components inspected during an overhaul. It also makes future overhauls possible.

ALMA TRUCK SERVICE CUSTOMERS CAN GET A COMPLETE ENGINE FOR THE PRICE OF A REBUILD
Alma Truck Service, located in Alma, Arkansas, specializes in rebuilding, installing and sourcing cores for Cat 15-liter truck engines, primarily 3406E and C-15 models.
This independent repair shop, which works closely with TLG Peterbilt and Riggs Cat, often recommends Cat Reman engines to customers who need a pre-assembled solution and whose existing cores are in good condition — meaning no cracks, no fire damage and minimal rust.
Why? Because those customers typically pay a fraction-of-new price with core return.2 Danny Long, who owns Alma Truck Service, says that makes the total cost of a Cat Reman engine comparable with the cost of a rebuild performed in the shop. But what if your core is damaged due to failure or has no value due to excessive rust or corrosion? Or what if you want to upgrade to a newer engine model or replace another engine brand?3
That was the case for trucker Keith Mack, who’s based out of Stuttgart, Arkansas. He started hearing an unusual noise from his 2006 Peterbilt 379X and took the truck into the Dobbs Peterbilt shop in Little Rock. The diagnosis was a broken crankshaft.
