Horizontal and Tub Grinders
Caldwell, Idaho
Cat® C27 and Cat C32
Diamond Z tub grinders and horizontal grinders, equipped with Cat engines, provide powerful clearing and recycling capabilities. Diamond Z was established in 1989 as a business that designs and develops horizontal grinders and tub grinders of different configurations to process green waste and clean waste. Grinding equipment is utilized if a site needs to be cleared for use, or if an event like a major storm creates damage and extensive clearing and cleanup is necessary. Because they are powerful, durable and reliable, Cat engines are used in 100% of Diamond Z grinding machines. The majority of grinders are run on Cat engines with a range of 400 to 1800 hp, which provide the perfect blend of power and versatility needed to cover the range of applications.
“Diamond Z demands a lot from its engines and the engines take a lot of abuse. We’ve tried competitor engines which performed well, but failure rate was extremely high and there was no longevity. Cat engines have always been the most consistent on every front — best performing, most durable, and most accessible to maintenance.” - Tristan Kruger, Product Support & Marketing, Diamond Z
Diamond Z horizontal grinders dominate the scene when it comes to cleaning and clearing areas following a major storm. It’s important for land-clearing contractors to quickly remove downed trees, damaged stone structures and construction debris following a catastrophe. Grinders can reduce the volume of waste by a factor of seven to one. That work requires machines and engines that can maintain production for hours at a time. Diamond Z grinders and Cat engines fit the bill, as they work 1,500 to 2,000 hours a year, running around the clock to get communities back on their feet.
“We’ve had plenty of storm activity in the last couple of years. Many of the general contractors who are pre-positioned with FEMA for major storm cleanup events are running Diamond Z equipment. There’s a reason behind that — throughput, durability and uptime are contributing factors in decisions contractors make in the equipment they choose.” - Tristan Kruger, Product Support & Marketing, Diamond Z
When clearing storm debris, there will be intervals when equipment needs cleaning and maintenance. A waste collection facility will continue to see waste come in. An operation needs to have the capacity to catch up in a hurry. Diamond Z tub and horizontal grinders are very productive machines with minimal downtime, allowing operators to follow up.
“Everything’s going to break. There’s always going to be downtime with equipment. We believe we minimize that better than anyone in the industry.” - Tristan Kruger, Product Support & Marketing, Diamond Z
Across the country and around the world, the construction industry is working to reduce the amount of green waste that finds its way into landfills. Diamond Z tub and horizontal grinders can help make the world a more sustainable place. Construction and demolition debris is often contaminated with plastics and dirty material that can’t be cleaned up. These machines reduce those materials, so a smaller percentage of waste is placed in landfills.
“Most of what we do is about waste aversion and waste reduction — keeping organic material out of landfills and recycling it back into a usable product, or reducing the size of it, if it has to go into a landfill.” - Tristan Kruger, Product Support & Marketing, Diamond Z
Western States and Diamond Z have been strategic partners for more than 30 years. Cat engines are used exclusively in Diamond Z tub grinders and horizontal grinders. When configuring engines for its equipment, Diamond Z works directly with Western States to ensure power needs are met. The two sides collaborate on important features, like side-load allowances, cam drives, air intakes and cooling functionality.
“We’ve worked with Cat from day one. As far as we’re concerned, there aren’t any other options. And that rings pretty loud with our entire customer base because it’s not just business, it’s their life. Cat has provided the best response rate in the industrial engine industry.” - Tristan Kruger, Product Support & Marketing, Diamond Z
Heavy equipment requires regular maintenance and onsite upkeep solutions. Having a Cat dealer like Western States close by is something that matters to Diamond Z. Its customers appreciate the scope of available Cat dealers for local support when issues arise or help is needed. And, wherever the work needs to get done, the quality of Cat products and customer service never wavers.
“Caterpillar is very accommodating. Friday night, something’s gotta ship, they’ve made every effort to be out here and stand beside us. There’s a lot of consistency across the globe, too. No matter where you go, you’re going to get the high-quality Cat engines you expect.” - Tristan Kruger, Product Support & Marketing, Diamond Z
The relationship between Diamond Z and Caterpillar continues to grow. As the wood-grinding industry evolves, Diamond Z and Western States will work together to find high-quality solutions for composting, construction and demolition.
New technologies, like connectivity and telematics, are taking construction and grinding to the next level. Telematics allows operators to monitor machine engines remotely and collect information to ensure productivity and prevent performance issues. Connectivity links machines so an entire fleet or jobsite can be more easily monitored. Diamond Products is working closely with its customers and Western States to develop the right solutions for machine connectivity and telematics going forward.
