To help our mining customers power their operations while meeting their climate-related goals, we’re focused on making traditional power sources even more efficient and fuel-flexible, pairing traditional power sources with new technologies in a hybrid format and replacing traditional power sources with stand-alone new technologies.
By innovating and integrating across products, systems and solutions, we’re able to provide the advanced power that helps our customers achieve their goals for lower greenhouse gas emissions, energy flexibility and business sustainability.
Many of our advanced power offerings are already at work on customers sites, either complementing existing engines or as stand-alone power delivery systems. Other systems are in development.
Hybrid powertrains, which employ an electric drive transmission with power components. are able to use different types of fuels or power sources such as biofuels and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which can deliver the same performance as diesel while reducing fuel burn and associated emissions.
Renewable fuels enable increased use of reduced-carbon options and hydrogen blends. Today, Caterpillar reciprocating engines are running on low-carbon-intensity renewable fuels including biodiesel, renewable diesel, biogas and landfill gas. We also offer Cat generator sets capable of operating on 100% hydrogen.
Cat truck engines are compatible with diesel fuel blended with lower-carbon intensity fuels such as biodiesel FAME (fatty acid methyl ester). They are also compatible with renewable fuels such as HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and GTL (Gas-to-Liquid) alternative fuels that are drop-in replacements for diesel. HVO and GTL are acceptable for use in all Cat engines at any blend level and up to 100%.
Our Dynamic Gas Blending™ conversion kits for mining trucks are a dual-fuel technology that allows the replacement of up to 70% of diesel fluid with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), which can be sourced locally and is produced more naturally than diesel. It also costs about 30% less than diesel with zero impact on performance. Physical availability remains over 90% and DGB has no impact on unplanned downtime. When LNG fuel is unavailable, the engine can run solely on diesel.
Microgrids integrate traditional and renewable energy sources into electric power systems to provide more reliable, resilient and sustainable solutions. The Cat Microgrid system, which can include photovoltaic solar modules and energy storage along with other forms of traditional generation, provides increased energy efficiency with reduced reliance on the grid and efficient power that can be produced where and when it's needed. Microgrid infrastructure projects reduce overall emissions through the use of microgrid controls that optimize the utilization of solar and storage devices in alignment with the mine’s electrical demand.
Beyond providing a variety of solutions that mining companies use to power their machines and their operations, Caterpillar is also focused on helping them manage that power — from providing dynamic and static charging systems for battery electric machines to optimizing the production and storage of energy at the mine level.
Cat power management solutions can identify the most efficient and cost-effective sources of energy to meet the mine’s requirements. The system can evaluate utility and local generation sources, such as photovoltaics (PV) and battery energy storage, along with the mine load requirements to optimize the system.
An additional alternative for local generation is the use of a combined heat and power (CHP) system to make use of the waste heat from power production. CHP systems can deliver up to 90% efficiency in operation, reduce emissions as compared to diesel or coal fire utility, and reduce operating cost for the mine.
We’ll also assist our customers with evaluating the many infrastructure decisions, variables and challenges that must be managed in real time in a dynamic working environment.
Another alternative energy source, fuel cells utilize renewable hydrogen fuel as a scalable source of electric power. We’re also exploring the opportunities within fuel cells powered by renewable hydrogen for stationary and mobile equipment.
