STUDY: Jacket Water and Oil Heater Performance Evaluation on a Reciprocating Engine Used for Gas Compression
Rationale
When your Cat® G3600 driven gas compression package shuts down for routine maintenance, it is important to keep the engine heated.
Jacket water and oil heaters are essential components for reliable startup of large reciprocating engines in the gas compression industry.
In response to technical questions raised by gas compression packagers, Caterpillar recently worked with the heater manufacturer, Hotstart® Inc., to complete a performance assessment of various flow paths used for jacket water and oil heaters on large engines working in the gas compression industry.
The project was completed in 2020 and the results are available on the My White Papers widget. This study also includes a description of heater operation and describes various installation considerations.
The need to define a common best practice was recognized by both the engine manufacturer, Caterpillar Inc., as well as the heater manufacturer, Hotstart Inc., in an effort to encourage quality application and installation practices.
The goal of this study was to evaluate four flow paths for the jacket water heater system and determine if these various flow paths provide adequate heating to the engine. Another objective was to evaluate the oil heating system.
This activity is an example of Caterpillar’s commitment to providing application support to customers in the Oil & Gas industry.
