For Worldwide Release: February 2024
IRVING, TEXAS – Caterpillar Inc. today announced that American Municipal Power (AMP) has selected Caterpillar and Cat® dealer MacAllister Machinery to supply 20 MW of behind-the-meter (BTM) natural gas power generation serving the Southern Michigan municipalities of Marshall, Coldwater, and Clinton.
Under the agreement, MacAllister will manage the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of three complete power generation facilities utilizing eight Cat G3520 natural gas generator sets. MacAllister will support the facility through a 10-year maintenance and monitoring agreement, which includes both general and preventative maintenance services.
Additionally, Caterpillar’s Active Management Platform will enable AMP to monitor, dispatch, and analyze the performance of the power generation assets remotely.
Scheduled for commissioning in mid-2024, the power generation facilities will supply capacity and energy resources for the municipalities, and they can be dispatched during peak demand on the local electric distribution system to reduce related power supply costs.
“Increased demand, regulatory mandates for carbon reduction and numerous other factors are accelerating the timetable for improvements in grid reliability and resilience,” said Jaime Mineart, Senior Vice President for Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division. “Our growing portfolio of highly efficient power solutions, market-leading distributed energy management capabilities and local Cat® dealer expertise provide an industry-leading solution to help utilities better navigate the industry’s growing complexities.”
Caterpillar’s Support for Utilities
Caterpillar is strategically positioned to support utilities through a growing portfolio of power innovations and digital solutions backed by decades of experience supporting utilities worldwide.
The company offers a range of power generation solutions, from traditional generator sets capable of operating on natural gas, renewable biogases, and hydrogen, to advanced, utility-scale energy storage technologies that provide grid stabilization and time-shifting capabilities.
Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) software solutions from Caterpillar can help customers monitor, manage, and monetize on-site energy assets, including natural gas and renewable power generation, storage, and microgrids. The Cat Active Management Platform monitors patterns from the grid and client facilities, analyzes opportunities in energy markets, and then dispatches distributed energy resources (DERs) to maximize results without disrupting normal business operations.
Additionally, it enables utilities and other energy providers to access DERs that can rapidly increase the utilization of renewable sources of energy on the grid.
Caterpillar delivers innovative power systems engineered for sustainability, durability, reliability, and value. The company offers worldwide product support, with parts and services packaged in customer value agreements available through the Cat® dealer network. In addition, Cat® dealer technicians are trained to provide a comprehensive range of maintenance and services that help customers optimize the total cost of ownership of Cat equipment.
