CAT 3512E Logs Over 200,000 Hours of Operation in Land Drilling and Well Fraturing Applications

Houston, TX – Caterpillar Oil & Gas is pleased to announce the latest Cat® 3512E (HD) Tier 4 Final engine has logged over 200,000 operating hours across 11 customers in land drilling and well fracturing applications—demonstrating the legendary 3512 engine performance and durability is positioned for the transition from the end of the EPA Flex period.

Manufactured in Lafayette, Indiana, the Cat 3512E engine meets EPA T4 final emissions standards with the proven NOx Reduction System (NRS) that has been in production since 2011 on C18, C27 and C32 sized engine with power ratings greater than 750 HP. The platform supports simplified customer operations as it does not require the use of additional fluids such as DEF.

For ease of installation, Caterpillar provides well service customers with a turn-key after treatment solution and various engine attachments. Customers also have the option to purchase the engine with the air cleaners, after treatment and exhaust system installed from the factory. “The 3512E Tier 4 engine was engineered to be a plug and play solution,” Derek Kamp, Caterpillar Oil & Gas product definition engineer said. “The engine is ready to be put on a trailer and run – there’s no need for brackets, mufflers or additional mounting equipment.”

Customers have enjoyed the lower owning and operating costs with the new 3512E (HD) Tier 4 Final engine. Compared to the 3512C (HD) Tier 2 well service engine, there is up to a 5% improvement in fuel economy and increased ambient and altitude capability, which results in fewer trailers on location. In addition, maintenance intervals have been increased with an optional 500 hour oil change interval and greatly improved air system with 300% more capacity. The overhaul interval has also been improved 25% with core iron improvements relative to previous models. In addition the engine has been designed to work in conjunction with Cat transmissions to provide an industry leading solution for driving down operating costs.

“Last year our 3500 engine platform celebrated its 35th anniversary, and over that time it’s proven itself in the toughest oil and gas applications,” said Diana Hopkins, Land Drilling and Production Marketing Manager for Caterpillar Oil & Gas. “The new 3512E is built on that robust platform, specifically designed for the application demands of modern electric drilling rigs. It delivers significant emissions reduction without sacrificing any of the performance our customers have come to expect from Caterpillar.”

Ease of integration is built into the 3512E’s drilling engine design as well. The engine’s footprint is similar to the current Tier 2 engine model and packages into current master skid designs with minimal changes. Compact dual diesel oxidation catalysts enable configuration flexibility and ease of packaging.

Built standard with Cat Product Link™, its easy-to-use interface, called Product Link Web, allows insight into the operation, health and productivity of your fleet.
