Caterpillar Dual Fuel Technology Excels in China

Cat Dynamic Gas Blending Retrofit Kit Provides Customer with Stellar Substitution Rate

Houston, Texas – Cat Dynamic Gas Blending™ (DGB) technology has delivered in China. Two® Cat DGB retrofit kits were installed on 2x 3512B generator sets, each rated at 1.2 MW @ 1500 rpm for a gas supplier operating in the Tarim Oilfield in China. The kits are achieving a substitution rate of sixty-percent for the majority of the load range, a significant accomplishment in the region.  Cat dealer China Engineers Limited led Caterpillar efforts on the sale, commissioning and continued product support.

“For the customer, the primary benefit of the DGB solution was the substitution rate achieved during a comprehensive testing time, delivering unmatched performance in the region,” Hon Meng Lim, Caterpillar Oil & Gas Asia Pacific product support manager stated. “The generator sets delivered the same transient load response operating in dual fuel mode as they did in diesel mode without any unexpected shut-downs or load-sharing issues.”

Dynamic Gas Blending is Caterpillar’s dual fuel technology for land drilling, production and well stimulation applications. Originally introduced to the market in 2012, the Cat DGB retrofit kits have become the industry’s leading dual fuel solution, operating in oilfields around the world. Along with the benefit of realizing significant fuel cost savings by substituting diesel fuel with natural gas, there are several other key features of the Cat DGB system that make it a winning solution for the oilfield.  Operators can run the system with confidence on CNG, LNG, and a wide range of field gas.  The system automatically adjusts to changes in gas quality without the need to perform any recalibration or adjustments to the system during or between jobs.

The Cat DGB kit for land drilling and production also includes an EMCP 4.4 panel as standard equipment. In addition to handling routine generator functions such as paralleling and load sharing, the EMCP 4.4 can automatically start and stop generators based on overall rig power demand. The kit is backed by a full factory warranty and designed to be easily ordered through the Cat dealer network. “For our customers, it is convenient for us to service as a single-source supplier with flexible, fully-supported power solutions for their operations,” Lim noted. “The importance of a factory-issued warranty has undoubtedly contributed to the DGB kits popularity in China.”
