Caterpillar Motoren GmbH & Co. KG was awarded in August 2019 with the "Economic Environmental Prize 2019" Studien- und Fördergesellschaft der Schleswig-Holsteinischen Wirtschaft (Society for Research and Funding of the Schleswig-Holstein economy). The award has been awarded annually since 1984 and is one of the oldest and most renowned of its kind in Germany. Caterpillar Motoren was awarded the prize for developing new marine engine technology and using LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) to significantly reduce pollutant emissions from shipping and ports.
The new environmental regulations pose major challenges for shipping to explore more environmentally friendly energy conversion systems.
Caterpillar is a pioneer in the field of manufacturing purpose-built LNG propulsion systems for a new generation of vessels. The MaK™ M 46 DF engines were individually engineered by Caterpillar for greener ship operation. The so-called dual fuel (DF) engines run on both diesel or heavy fuel oil as well as on gas and fulfill the required emissions regulations in every operating mode.
Due to their special design, the MaK Dual Fuel engines can utilize gaseous fuels that mix with the intake air. At high compression, the gas-air mixture is ignited and burnt by a minimum injection of diesel oil. At the same time, fuel consumption and thus CO2 emissions are significantly reduced. The emissions of soot and particulate matter and sulfur dioxide are almost completely eliminated.
Caterpillar not only supports the construction of new LNG-powered ships, but also offers flexible solutions for the conversion of conventional diesel engines to LNG. Meanwhile, various tankers, ferries and cruise ships with MaK dual fuel engines are on the way.
As the first cruise ships, the AIDAprima and AIDAperla were equipped with not only three conventional diesel engines, but also with a dual fuel engine. This provides electrical energy during the port stay. Outside the port, these ships continue to run on diesel.
For the cruise industry, this is a big step in the right direction, because neither the passengers nor the environment in the port cities are unnecessarily affected by pollutants.
Since December 2018, AIDAnova has been the world's first LNG-operated cruise ship to travel. Thanks to its four MaK VM 46 DF engines, it can also be operated at sea with its low-emission Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Only 1% diesel is still needed for injection into the hot combustion chamber. Thus, the engines are completely started with natural gas and operated. Thanks to the MaK DF engines, the emission of carbon dioxide is significantly reduced and other pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, low sulfur oxides and fine dust are avoided as far as possible.
The AIDAnova marked the beginning for cleaner and more efficient cruise ship operations. Shipping companies are increasingly relying on LNG and soon more cruise ships equipped with MaK DF engines will set sail.
