Cat® Advanced Condition Monitoring™ service achieves ABS Certification

Houston, TX – Caterpillar Oil & Gas is pleased to announce it has achieved certification from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) as a Condition Monitoring Firm based on Caterpillar’s Advanced Condition Monitoring (ACM) services.

ACM services collect data from customer equipment and—combined with factory subject matter expertise provided by a Cat® Fleet Advisor, helps make informed and proactive decisions on maintenance and repairs of equipment. Now, these services can be used to reduce downtime and resources needed during major ABS inspections.

Offshore vessels classed under ABS undergo thorough inspections every five years in order to maintain classification. “Historically, when one of our offshore customers worked with the ABS inspector to validate the internal condition of the engine, they would typically experience significant downtime,” said Stephan Konrad, fleet advisor at Caterpillar. “This not only interrupts operations but also requires significant resources to disassemble, inspect and reassemble one or more engines. Now, utilizing Cat® Advanced Condition Monitoring combined with the product expertise, we can help document the condition of the engines and the inspector may agree to forego dismantling equipment all together. To the customer, this can mean significantly less downtime and resource needs which will improve performance and the bottom line,” said Konrad.

Caterpillar is very pleased to be recognized by ABS as a certified external specialist for our diesel engine products. “Over time, we are collecting large amounts of critical operational data and combine this information with fluid analysis data, site information and other input from the operator. Applying analytics 24/7 allows then us to judge and document the condition of the engine,” stated Konrad. “Technology today really allows us to look deep into an engine without actually taking it apart. Also, building a good database of operational data over time is as critical as is the data coming in right now as it allows for trending. Combining those two has really become a very powerful tool and I am looking forward to applying these technological advances to help our customers reduce downtime.”

“At Seadrill, we recognize ABS as a global leader in classification services to the marine and offshore industries, said a Technical Manager at Seadrill. “Maintaining ABS certification is essential to us. By Caterpillar obtaining certification for their Advanced Condition Monitoring service, it will make maintaining Class a more efficient and cost effective process” he said.
