Caterpillar Oil & Gas Sells 700th Dynamic Gas Blending Kit

For Worldwide Release: October 2014
Release Number: CO&G14P19

Houston, Texas - Caterpillar Oil & Gas is pleased to announce the sale of the 700th Cat® Dynamic Gas Blending™ (DGB™) kit for 3500 engines, the company’s industry-leading dual fuel technology for land drilling, production and well stimulation applications. Originally introduced to the market in 2012, the CARB certified Cat DGB retrofit kits have become the industry’s chosen dual fuel system, operating in global oilfields ranging from the United States to China. The 700th kit will be installed on a Cat 3512C land electric drive drilling module rated at 1045 ekW (1467 bhp) @ 1200 rpm.

“We’ve been very pleased with the industry’s adoption of our Dynamic Gas Blending system across various applications, with customers typically citing higher gas substitution, fully-automated gas controls and the service delivered by the Cat dealer network as differentiating factors in the Caterpillar solution,” said Darin Bohlmann, Caterpillar Oil & Gas land drilling segment manager. “We are continuing to engineer the DGB solution to meet evolving industry needs. For example, our new Product Link™ service provides customers with remote, real-time engine and gas substitution data to help them manage their operations more efficiently.”

Product Link is Caterpillar’s enterprise equipment management solution that wirelessly connects customers to Cat equipment, providing customers with essential information such as fuel burn, percent gas substitution, hours and diagnostic codes. Product Link helps operators make timely, fact-based decisions that can boost the efficiency of their fleet and the productivity of their job sites.

The Cat DGB system for land drilling, production and well stimulation achieves maximum substitution of diesel fuel with natural gas during operations. Along with the benefit of realizing significant fuel cost savings by substituting diesel fuel with natural gas, there are several other key features of the Cat DGB system that make it a winning solution for the oilfield.  Operators can run the system with confidence on CNG, LNG, and a wide range of field gas, knowing that the engine is maintaining United States EPA Tier 2 level emissions with the Cat Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) included in the DGB kit.  The system automatically adjusts to changes in gas quality without the need to perform any recalibration or adjustments to the system during or between jobs.

The Cat DGB kit for land drilling and production also includes an EMCP 4.4 panel as standard equipment. In addition to handling routine generator functions such as paralleling and load sharing, the EMCP 4.4 can automatically start and stop generators based on overall rig power demand. “The EMCP 4.4 can dramatically improve owning and operating costs on a drilling rig by reducing unnecessary engine run time and keeping the engines in their sweet spot for fuel economy and gas substitution,” Bohlmann noted.

The Cat DGB solution for well stimulation applications is available in Air To Air After Cooled (ATAAC) and Separate Circuit After Cooled (SCAC) configurations for 2250 hp and 2500 hp @1900rpm ratings. Customers ordering the DGB kits benefit from an expedited order and installation process as a result of the proven capabilities of the trained technicians at global Cat dealer locations.
