Houston, Texas – Operating in the rugged Arctic conditions of Alaska’s North Slope might be considered an insurmountable challenge for some power solutions, but not for the Cat®
CG137-12 gas generator set. In August 2014, Caterpillar and Cat dealer NC Power Systems delivered two Cat CG137-12 generator sets to Black Gold Oilfield Services for operation in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, where winds regularly exceed 100 mph and temperatures are capable of reaching negative 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Since going online the two gas generator sets have delivered more than reliable power; they have also saved Black Gold Oilfield Services over
$300,000 in operating costs in a short six months. By reliably powering a 265 bed man camp strictly on the Cat C137 generator sets and not having to utilize local utilities, Black Gold Oilfield Services is accruing monthly fuel savings in excess of $50,000.
“Faced with a very tight timeline, we were pleased to provide the customer with a factory-built product installed in an Arctic module in three quick months, from the receipt of the order to delivery,” Erick Pomrenke, NC Power Systems power generation sales representative said. “The fuel savings delivered by the CG137 gas generator sets coupled with their durable performance have been a great success story for Black Gold Oilfield Services.”
The Cat CG137- 12 is a V12, 4-stroke-cycle generator set capable of delivering up to 400 ekW
@ 60 Hz of rated power. With ratings geared specifically towards fuel flexibility, the CG137- 12 was designed to operate on a wide range of gas quality – from wellhead gas to pipeline quality natural gas. The generator set features superior gas engine transient capability as well as the ADEM™ A4 control system providing integrated ignition, speed control, and engine protection. Both the component design and fuel flexibility allow minimum site preparation and low installation cost. The generator set is NSPS site compliant capable with air-fuel ratio control and three-way catalyst included as part of the Caterpillar package. In this instance, Black Gold Oilfield Services utilized Caterpillar's EMCP 4.4 control panel for on-engine paralleling of the two units for 800 ekW of total power available.
“The natural gas generator sets perform beyond our expectations,” Doulgas Cissna, General Manager of Black Gold Oilfield Services, said. “They power our North Slope camps perfectly and offer us greater efficiencies and savings. I will definitely consider making the conversion and using them on the rest of our camps worldwide.”
