Power Need

A Florida utility company servicing the Tampa Bay area needed 20 MW of power for increased capacity during peak summer months. In addition, 50 MW of power capacity was required to compensate for an aging power plant.

Total Solutions

To meet increased summer loads, Cat dealer Ringhaver Power Systems delivered 11 Cat XQ2000 mobile power modules to eleven substations for a total of 20 MW. Ringhaver also supplied 50 MW with 30 Cat 2 MW power modules, enabling the utility to decommission the power plant.

Ringhaver worked closely with the utility’s engineers to design a system to preserve their connections to the grid. As the general contractor, Ringhaver coordinated the leveling and grading of land to prepare the site, as well as the installation of underground conduit, overhead power lines and power poles. Ringhaver provided a 2500-gallon auxiliary fuel tank for each module and installed all of the necessary fuel piping. To boost the power modules from 480 volts to 13,200 volts, Ringhaver provided 2500 kVA transformers.

A team of 30 technicians had the power modules on-line in 30 days – two weeks ahead of schedule. Throughout the four-month rental, Ringhaver’s dedicated plant coordinator immediately addressed service issues from a modular, on-site office.

Results

Ringhaver supplied relief for peak load requirements and an aging power plant, freeing the utility from purchasing power on the open market. Because the installation was completed ahead of schedule, the utility was able to meet an all-time summer instantaneous peak load record, June 12, six days before the official start-date.

Ringhaver has proven for two years in a row that they deliver total solutions, and will continue to provide cost savings to the utility in 2002 through total rental solutions.
