A new era of attachments is here that can help you be more efficient on the job. We take a look at what makes Smart Attachments so unique, from plug-and-play technology to ease of operation.
CAITLIN MADDOCK-BAHR | Social Media & Digital Strategy Manager
You’ve heard of attachments, but what about Smart Attachments? Construction can be hard work, but there are ways to make things easier on the job site. With new technology and an upgraded set of features, Smart Attachments are an easy way to boost efficiency on the job for both experienced and new operators alike.
Before considering a Smart Attachment, it’s important to make sure your equipment is compatible. Smart Attachments are compatible with Cat® D3 Series Skid Steer and Compact Track Loaders. There are currently three different Smart Attachments available:
Smart Attachments are useful for a wide range of construction applications, as they give you more options for your compatible equipment.
The Smart Grader Blade and Smart Dozer Blade attachments are great for cutting, moving and grading base materials for both rough and fine jobs like parking lots, roads and railways.
The Smart Backhoe attachment gives a skid steer or compact track loader all the function of an excavator. It can be used for digging or trenching and can also work with other attachments like hammers, augers and compactors. It gives you clear visibility and an easy transition from travel to digging mode.
What separates Smart Attachments from standard attachments is their technology. D3 Series machines are able to recognize the attachment you’ve plugged in and display the right controls for you.
Once connected, the Smart Attachments will enable a special display on the machine’s screen. This display gives you additional information about an attachment’s position, rotation and slope.
The most significant feature of Smart Technology, though, is the advanced controls. For example, the Smart Grader Blade allows the machine’s left joystick to control driving while the right joystick controls the attachment itself. Standard attachments typically use buttons and thumb rollers, making precise movements a bit harder to control. The Smart Backhoe lets you use both joysticks to control the attachment instead of any levers, which has the added benefit of letting you stay in the cab during operation.
ASSIST adds an extra layer of control and stability to your job, making it easier to finish quickly. Traditionally, you’d have to manually fix a grader or dozer blade to your desired position and slope, but ASSIST corrects and maintains the position and slope of the blade itself. Additionally, you can use the joysticks to set a blade slope for the machine to remember for future use.
Through Smart Technology, Smart Attachments can make construction jobs safer and easier than ever before, allowing you to have more control over your equipment without having to leave the cab. As technology advances, we will continue to see improvements in equipment and attachments. Cat Smart Attachments are leading the industry in plug-and-play recognition, helping you minimize downtime and maximize productivity.
