VisionLink Emissions Reports

Here's How

As regulations tighten around the world, monitoring and tracking greenhouse gas emissions from your heavy equipment is becoming an essential management task. In this article, Caterpillar Application Specialist Gage Witt shows you how to quickly and easily generate emissions reports using VisionLink®.

Tracking Emissions For Regulatory Compliance

VisionLink now includes a function that automatically tracks CO2 output from your equipment fleet. Using machine-generated data from Product Link™ telematics devices, VisionLink then calculates your CO2 output per machine/gallon/liter based on machine run time, fuel burn and fuel type.

It’s easy to configure your fleet within VisionLink, filter the results for a specific set of assets and generate emissions reports for a day, a week or whatever time frame you choose.

In areas where CO2 emissions are taxed, these reports will help you budget for predicted tax costs. They help you identify assets that are generating excessive emissions through a high level of fuel burn, and provide solid data to challenge regulatory fines if need be.

Step 1: Configure Your Fleet

To get started, open the VisionLink Administration Page. Here you can configure the mix of diesel- and gas-fueled equipment in your fleet.

Simply select an asset, choose the CO2 Emission option in the Configure box and select a fuel type.

VisionLink sets every asset for diesel by default, so you’ll only need to change the Fuel Type setting for gas-powered machines. This is important because gas and diesel engines produce different amounts of CO2 for each gallon or liter of fuel used.

Step 2: View Your Fleet Totals

The CO2 Emissions column on the Utilization Page shows the emissions output for each asset, measured in pounds or kilograms depending on your VisionLink Preferences settings.

  1. The emissions data is automatically populated within the column based on each asset’s run time and fuel burn.
  2. An aggregate CO2 total for all assets is shown at the bottom of the column.
  3. You can drag the column to a convenient position within the page.
  4. This page defaults to data for the Current Week, but you can easily change the date range to a specific Day, the Last 30 Days or any time frame within the past 13 months.

Step 3: Filter For Specifics in Your Report

When your fleet is configured and data is populated in the CO2 Emissions column, you’re ready to apply filters. Go to the VisionLink Administrator Page and click “Add New Report.”

From here you can drill into your results to see specific data. You can filter your results in a variety of ways to suit your needs:

  1. Select a group of assets — See the results for a specific type of machine or for those working on a particular jobsite. You don’t have to filter by a group or geofence. You can manually select a few assets or include all assets.
  2. Select assets within a geofence boundary — Set up a geofence around a jobsite or a region (a county or a state, for example) and you can generate a report for that location. This is useful if you’re working across state or national borders and need to budget for differing carbon taxes within each region.
  3. Change the date range of your report — You can change the default date range of your report from the Current Week to whatever time period you choose.

Step 4: Produce & Deliver Your Report

Now you’re ready to produce your report and send it to the appropriate people inside and outside your organization.

  1. Add a subject line to let recipients know what’s in the report.
  2. Add contacts for email delivery to the intended recipients.
  3. Configure the report format as email-only, PDF or Excel spreadsheet files.
  4. Set up automatic recurring reports at regular intervals — daily, weekly, monthly, etc. — to keep your team and regulatory bodies informed as desired or required.
  5. Print or send your report for in-person or electronic delivery.

Stay Informed. Stay Ahead.

VisionLink makes monitoring and reporting CO2 emissions easy. Once your fleet is configured, data is automatically entered and can be filtered very simply. The results are accurate because VisionLink automatically calculates CO2 output based on actual fuel burn and run time.

The CO2 Emission column is included as standard in recent VisionLink updates. Check to ensure you have the latest version (update manually if you don't) to stay informed and stay ahead of your emissions reporting needs.
