FIRST TIER 4 FINAL TRACTOR TUG ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER
When it was time for Bisso Towboat Co. Inc. to add an eighth tractor tug to its fleet, the New Orleans-based operation faced not just one, but three big challenges: increased bollard pull, compliance with Subchapter M requirements and lower emissions. To address the latter, Bisso chose Cat® 3516E marine propulsion engines to power the Andrew S, the first tractor tugboat on the Mississippi River to meet U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final emission standards.
Five of Bisso’s existing tractor tugs, which assist oceangoing vessels on the Mississippi and Inner Harbor Navigational Canal, already feature 3516 engines. For the Andrew S, the company considered Tier 4 Final engines with both Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology.
Following visits to a McAllister harbor tugboat in New York and a Caden Foss tug in San Francisco, both powered by Cat engines with SCR, Bisso’s leaders were convinced the Caterpillar solution would fit the Andrew S’s 98-foot hull. They were also impressed by the complete lack of smoke generated by the Cat Tier 4 Final engines during vessel operation.
Bisso took delivery of the Andrew S, which was built at Main Iron Works, in October 2019. At 6,008 hp, it’s the highest horsepower tractor tug operating on the Mississippi and was named one of WorkBoat’s “10 Significant Boats of 2019.”
