Cat Engines at the Miami Yacht Show

The Miami Yacht Show, one of the great luxury-yacht exhibitions on the calendar, opens on Thursday, Valentine’s Day, February 14, and continues through Monday, February 18th.

The Yacht Show is distinct from, although it runs at the same time as, the Miami International Boat Show. The coincidental timing is helpful for them both.

The Yacht Show took place at Miami Beach for 30 years, across from the Fontainebleau: it has a new location this year, though. In a change designed to allow for more parking, more expansive VIP lounges … more of moreness, really … the Show has relocated to One Herald Place on Biscayne Bay, between the Venetian and MacArthur causeways. The Show has long distinguished itself by the size and luxurious nature of the yachts on display, and this year is no exception.

Forbes, on Tuesday, February 5, ran a piece by Bill Springer on the “top 5 most expensive yachts” on display there this year. As it happens, the top two of the items on this top five list have Cat engines.

That Turkish Word for Destiny

The Kismet, a 312’ 4” yacht with a beam of 45’ 3”, was built in 2014 for the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars football franchise, Shahid Khan. The Kismet is a beauty that summers in the Mediterranean, where it can be chartered for a price of about $1.37 million per week. In the winter, she cruises the Caribbean, and can be chartered there for a bargain price of $1.2 million per week.

In either locale, she is powered by twin Cat 3516C engines, which can get it to a top speed of 17 knots.

The ship’s brochure has an impressive photo spread of the interior, which was designed by Raymond Langton. Exterior design is by Espen Oeino.

The other yacht powered by Cat at the show, the Coral Ocean, is somewhat smaller but hardly petite.

Keeping a ‘94 Look and Feel

Two years ago, an admirer of the Coral Ocean, commented on the refitting, said that her design “pulls off the typical Bannenberg trick of appearing to be entirely fitting and thrillingly audacious at the same time.”

The reference there was to the late Jon Bannenberg, the famous English-Australian designer who made a point of designing both the exterior and the interior of the yachts that bear his impress. designer. In this case, Bannenberg had some help in the interior from the artist and furniture stylist Andrew Holmes, who used actual driftwood, as well as parchment, rough limestone, conch shells, and African tribal cloth.

The engines? Again: Cat 3516C engines. Like the Kismet, the Coral Ocean can get up to 17 knots out of them,and can cruise comfortably at 14. She has a maximum range of 6,000 nautical miles.
