Lamprell Energy has built a reputation as a trusted provider of engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI), platform fabrication and related services for the oil and gas and renewables industries. The United Arab Emirates-based company uses reliable Cat® power solutions and generator support from local Cat dealer Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar to facilitate ongoing success in offshore drilling applications. For more than 45 years, Lamprell has developed specialized expertise in rig construction and refurbishment as well as providing maintenance solutions for floating and fixed offshore facilities. As an international contractor, they support major oil and gas companies, such as Aramco and Saipem, as well as energy companies across multiple continents.
Lamprell has delivered 30 jackup drilling rigs over the years, and they’ve used Cat power solutions from Al-Bahar for each of them. The company also has completed 11 land rigs and hundreds of rig refurbishments. The consistent selection of Cat engines across dozens of rig and repower projects reflects Caterpillar’s reputation for reliability among shipbuilders, drilling contractors and offshore oil and gas solution providers.
"Throughout Lamprell's history of building jackup drilling rigs, we've consistently chosen Al-Bahar to purchase Cat engines for all 30 of our projects," stated Zadok Van Winden, Director of Projects at Lamprell Energy. "It's not just our preference; it's a choice heavily influenced by our clients and operators who prioritize reliability above all else. Al-Bahar's exceptional support and network have been instrumental in our success. Cat engines have proven time and again to meet the demands of both our shipyard and our clients."
For more than 15 years, Al-Bahar’s reliable power solutions network and Caterpillar’s engine expertise and depth of resources have proved critical in helping Lamprell grow and succeed. When Lamprell and Al-Bahar first began collaborating, there wasn’t an established track record of integrating engines with third-party switchgear systems. The Cat dealer’s guidance for seamless integration of what are essentially the key components on a drilling rig has helped Lamprell scale its delivery of more reliable onshore and offshore power solution projects.
Once Lamprell receives the vessel’s hull from a dry dock facility, they install and commission the engines. Then they can operate the system to jack up the rig and load it out. Durable Cat power solutions support continuous duty operation, which Lamprell relies on heavily during the nine to 12 months it takes to finish building the rig. The Cat engines’ reliability helps lower Lamprell’s operating costs and total cost of ownership while also reducing warranty claims from customers.
Van Winden continued, "The reliability we witness during commissioning in the shipyard is mirrored in offshore operations. While we're obligated to cover warranty claims for various equipment in the first year, it's remarkably rare to see any such claims for Cat engines. When clients return for rig refurbishment, they always express their preference for Caterpillar due to the engines' unwavering reliability. Cat engines don't just meet expectations; they exceed them, delivering dependable performance in the challenging offshore environment.
That dynamic enhances operational efficiency and allows for prompt customer delivery. The field-tested reliability of Cat engines and gensets operating at the shipyard and offshore helps minimize costly downtime. Dependable performance from these power solutions is crucial in offshore operations, which have a slimmer margin for error than on land and can involve costlier repairs.
Cat power solutions combined with local Cat dealer expertise are driving long-term success for Lamprell. In an evolving industry, Lamprell continues to diversify their offerings with an increasing number of renewables projects including offshore wind farm jackup installations. Oil and gas resources remain a critical part of meeting global energy needs amid this ongoing transition. Lamprell occupies an important position by serving both types of projects and demonstrating a strong track record of success in the Middle East and globally. Proven Cat power solutions and Al-Bahar’s commitment to customer support empower Lamprell to address their customers’ shifting needs and continue driving the industry forward.
