To keep your Cat® equipment working well, you’ll need to replace your alternator at regular intervals. This planned maintenance is necessary, but it’s simple to do the work yourself.
Now it’s time to get started! Learn more when you watch our instructional video and read the process written below. We show this maintenance on a Cat Next Generation 906 Wheel Loader. Be sure to check your Operation and Maintenance Manual (OMM) to review the proper safety procedures for your equipment.
When it’s time to replace your alternator, grab your personal protective equipment (PPE) and prepare for service by moving your machine to level ground and lowering all implements. Next, release the hydraulic system pressure, engage the parking brake, and make sure you complete all lock out and tagout procedures.
Once your machine is parked and ready for maintenance, grab all the tools you’ll need to complete this service. Double check to make sure you have the correct alternator customized for your machine model’s engine.
To begin service, open the engine hood and turn the battery disconnect switch off. And if your machine does not have a battery disconnect switch, you can disconnect the battery cables instead.
From here, you’ll need to loosen and remove the bolts from the guard. Next, loosen these two bolts and push the alternator to remove the V-best. Remove the nut, disconnect the harness and remove the final bolts. At this point, you’ll be able to remove the old alternator.
To install your new alternator, you’ll simply need to repeat the steps in reverse. Here’s what this process will look like:
Put the nut and harnesses back on.
Tighten all the bolts by hand. You’ll also need to screw in a few bolts once you install the belt.
Place the guard again, and then install the bolts to keep it in place.
Finally, turn the battery switch back on or reconnect the battery cables. At this point, you’ll be able to test your alternator to make sure it is working properly.
Do you need to replace your starter instead? We also have a video and instructions for that process.
When you’re shopping for a new alternator, visit Parts.Cat.com. Another good option may be Self-Service Options (SSO), which lists all the parts and instructions you need to replace your alternator. Finally, consider asking your Cat dealer if a Cat Reman alternator would be a good option for your machine.
And if you have other questions about installing your new alternator, make sure you check out the Operation and Maintenance Manual or contact your Cat dealer.
