Replacing the Starter on Your Cat® Equipment

Estimated read time: 2 minutes

Replacing your machine’s electrical starter is an important part of maintaining your equipment. Lucky for you, you can remove and install your starter in just a few simple steps.

To start this work, familiarize yourself with the safety guidelines listed in your Operation and Maintenance Manual (OMM) and grab the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).  Consider watching this video where we show the service on a Cat® Next Generation 906 Wheel Loader or keep reading to get all the details:

Before you get started, make sure you order all the parts and tooling you need at Parts.Cat.com. For the service instructions and parts you need to replace your equipment’s electrical starter, check out Self-Service Options (SSO).

Once you’re ready for service, park your machine on a dry and level surface. You will also need to lower implements, release hydraulic system pressure and engage the parking brake.

Removing Old Starter

When it’s time to remove your old starter, open the engine hood and turn off the battery disconnect switch. If your machine doesn’t have this switch, disconnect the battery cables instead. From here, you’ll want to remove the nut and disconnect the cables.

Once this is complete, you’ll disconnect the harness. After removing any final nuts, remove the old starter.

Installing new Starter

To install a new starter, you’ll repeat those steps in reverse order.

  1. Begin the process by placing the new starter and installing all the nuts.

  2. The next step is to connect the harness and cables.

  3. You’ll need to turn the battery switch back on, or reconnect the battery cables, and then test the starter to make sure it’s working properly.
