Welding by Day and Fighting Fires by Night

Billy Irvin, a Caterpillar Decatur Maintenance Welder, has worked in welding for over 15 years.

But welding isn’t Billy’s only specialty. During his free time, Billy also serves as a Safety Officer/Firefighter at his local Volunteer Fire Department in Kenney, Illinois. Kenney Fire Department receives, on average, over one hundred and fifty calls yearly, most of which Billy helps answer.

Billy also serves as the "go to guy" when anything mechanical breaks at the department and needs to be fixed. For instance, Billy was instrumental in giving the Decatur D6C Crawler (pictured above) a remodel after its rubber tracks needed replacing.

Delivering Groceries on the Streets of Saltillo

Regina Nuno Chavez, a Caterpillar employee in Saltillo, and her family wanted to make a difference during the pandemic. They decided to deliver groceries to the needy, creating kits with staple items like beans, rice, tuna, soap, toilet paper, milk, flour, coffee, sugar, and more.

Once they had everything bagged together, they handed out the kits to elderly people and families who had lost jobs because of quarantine. One of the people who received a kit was a father who was selling pies on a boulevard with his little daughter in his arms.

A Citizens Initiative

Burkina Equipements is part of the JA Delmas Network, our Cat® dealer for West Africa. Based in Burkina Faso, they have recently given back to their community in a big way: with a donation of one ton of rice.

The rice was donated to the town hall in nearby Saaba and will be distributed to the elderly, people living on their own and others living in precarious situations.

Burkina Equipment’s’ staff also saw the need for sanitary kits to keep people protected from COVID-19. Their sanitary kits included: masks, soap, gloves and bins for disposal. They were distributed at the local medical building, Centre de Santé et de Promotion Sociale (CSPS) of Saaba and to the Medical Centre of Gampéla.

Critical Power in Critical Times

As New York battles COVID-19, one of the response measures is setting up emergency field hospitals to provide around-the-clock care for severely sick patients. These hospitals require around-the-clock power to function. H.O. Penn, Caterpillar dealer for Southern New York and Connecticut, was contracted by the State of New York, to power a field hospital.

H.O Penn was given a tight timeline of 24 hours to set up 10x2 Megawatt 3516 Cat generator sets for the needs of field hospitals in New York City and Long Island. An extended warranty was required as part of the deal, as well as robust servicing and maintenance for this critical application.

Rick Beck, Cat Financial’s Regional Insurance Manager, secured approval to utilize deductibles in exchange for deferring the inspections that otherwise would have taken days to complete. Rick also set up a detailed action plan with terms beneficial to the customer, dealer and Caterpillar, ensuring the deal would go through.

With the financials assured, H.O. Penn was able to get down to business. The dealer group ran the generator units for two hours and serviced the gensets before delivering and installing them to make sure they could perform at their best. And within the required timeframe the project was moving ahead, and the field hospitals were receiving the gensets – to generate electricity and to save lives.
