Utilities supply power that meets the needs of homes, businesses, hospitals, schools, and factories. Cat® products and services help utilities support the global energy transition.
More than any other industry, utilities face the greatest challenges in addressing the energy transition. While power consumption is projected to triple by 20501, utilities have also been tasked with reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Grid reliability and resilience are also top of mind in the aftermath of extreme weather events and escalating security considerations.
Caterpillar is strategically positioned to help utilities navigate the energy transition through a growing portfolio of power innovations and digital solutions backed by decades of experience supporting utilities worldwide.
We offer traditional generator sets as well as advanced, utility-scale energy storage technologies, and we supply turnkey virtual power plant (VPP) solutions to help utilities monitor, manage, and monetize distributed energy resource (DER) systems.
Contact us today to find out how we can work together to chart a path for your energy transition.

Cat® 3512C Diesel Gensets Protect Data via Rooftop
Cat® Dealer Nebraska Machinery Company delivered three generator sets to a third-story roof to provide backup power for 1623 Farnam, a growing data center supporting on-ramps to the world’s largest cloud providers. Chosen for their weight, size, and low noise-level, the generator sets receive maintenance and support through a Cat Customer Value Agreement.
Learn MoreSolar Power Project Helps Lower Energy Costs at Wastewater Treatment Plant
Cat® dealer Ziegler Power Systems engineered and designed a solar project for the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District’s wastewater treatment plant. The 500 kW direct current system supplies about 70 percent of the power demand at the wastewater treatment plant, saves the district $100,000 a year in energy costs, and offsets almost 500 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.
Learn MoreUtah Utility Teams Up With Caterpillar To Revamp Hydroelectric Plant
Utah Municipal Power Agency worked with Cat® dealer Wheeler Power Systems to overhaul its hydroelectric plant in Manti, including implementing Cat Switchgear and controls as well as remote monitoring.
Learn MoreUniversity of Washington Adds to Standby Genset Fleet On Time and On Budget Through Cooperative Purchasing
Responsible for providing chilled water and emergency power to critical parts of the campus, the Campus Energy, Utilities and Operations department at the University of Washington acquired a fourth Cat® 3516 series standby generator set through cooperative purchasing to meet the university’s growing emergency power demand.
Learn MoreAirport Microgrid Anchored By Cat® G3412 Genset
The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport installed a solar farm connected to a microgrid that includes energy storage, a Cat® G3412 gas generator set, and a control system as part of efforts to reduce the airport’s impact on the environment. The microgrid supplies power to the runway lights and other navigation aids at the airport and provides energy to an adjacent neighborhood since it’s tied into the local utility’s distribution system.
Learn MoreService Agreement with Cat® Dealer Helps Iowa Utility Meet Requirements
Mount Pleasant Municipal Utilities depends on 12 Cat diesel generator sets to produce backup power should the entire city of 8,700 residents lose power. To comply with strict emissions requirements and keep the generators in top condition, Mount Pleasant counts on periodic testing and regular maintenance from Cat dealer Altorfer Power Systems as part of their long-term Customer Value Agreement.
Learn MoreVolunteer Energy Cooperative Saves Thousands in Monthly Energy Costs
Volunteer Energy Cooperative delivers reliable power to its members across 17 counties in Tennessee. To keep costs low, the cooperative commissioned a Cat® G3412 gas generator set at its Decatur headquarters to help offset costs during peak demand periods.

Learn MoreWhen installed at or near a host facility with a significant heat demand, a generator set system with heat recovery can supplement existing boilers or other heat sources. In these situations, it is not necessary to invest in sophisticated systems that wring the maximum available heat from the engines. The only requirement is that the value of the heat captured significantly exceeds the cost to install and maintain the heat recovery equipment.
Learn MoreDiesel generator sets in the range of 10 kW to 20 MW are designed to operate mainly under variable loads. Generator sets will be purchased as either Standby, Mission Critical, Prime, or Continuous rated depending on the application. High peak demand customers incur a peak service charge from the utility. A peaking system with proper sizing, testing, and maintenance will help save on utility costs.
Learn MoreAs growth in distributed energy and other factors increase the risk of instability on electric utility systems, nations and grid providers are tightening grid-code requirements. Developers of distributed energy projects need to stay current with grid-codes and can look to a trusted equipment manufacturer for help with compliance.
