Every year, Thailand’s sugar industry produces more than 14 million metric tons of refined sugar. Harvesting sugarcane is a labor-intensive and time-consuming job, which is why companies like Pattanakit Banpong Co., Ltd. (PAT) manufacture sugarcane harvesters. The 11-roller machines cut stalks, strip leaves and chop the cane into segments, while depositing waste material back into the field for fertilizer.
PAT sugarcane harvesters process more than 800,000 tons of cane per year. When PAT needed to upgrade their engines for more efficiency and power, they chose the Cat® C9.3B Industrial Diesel Engine for their fleet.
With 375 hp and four pump sets, the Cat C9.3B gives the harvesters a fast response to their heavy workload. One of the key components is the four-blade extractor fan, which separates the crops with a cyclone of wind so that only the trash is extracted. PAT sugarcane harvesters operate with the first automatic control system in Thailand, using electronic systems to help control driver operations.
The Cat C9.3B delivers expanded capability with 19% more power and 16% more torque than previous platforms, allowing the sugarcane harvesters to increase their uptime and overall productivity. It has standard service intervals of 500 hours under normal operating conditions, with remote mount options for serviceable items like oil and fuel filters. For PAT, that means more power at less cost.
The Metro Cat team partnered with PAT to offer support during the design phase of the C9.3B. Today, 100% of PAT machines, including the Sugarcane Harvester S3, are equipped with Cat engines.
